Mary Had a Little What?

I’ve mentioned my little nephews before. I love them to death. They are so loveable and smart. However, that’s not their only side. They spent the night a few days ago so my kid sister could work the late shift on her job.

Everyone is congregated in the kitchen just talking and stuff when I notice that my 7 year-old nephew is singing. Now if you remember, I am muslim and not up on a lot of the latest tunes. I wasn’t sure if he was singing a “real” song or something he created.

An aside…remember, I converted to Islam several years ago and aside from a few isolated family members, I am the only muslim in my immediate family. My family was brought up Baptist.

Now, with that being said, I began to make out what my cutiepie of a nephew was saying. Maybe you guys can recognize what this song is:

“I blew up your spot cause I’m not your man”

Now, I’m like, “what did you just say?” He smiles coyly and says he was just singing a song. I sighed and reminded my sister that she has to be mindful of what videos and songs she exposes him to. I’m sure she doesn’t deliberately let him listen to crazy stuff but when they’re driving, she’s busy chatting on the cell phone.

Anyway, I ask, “why don’t you sing a nice song like Mary Had a Little Lamb?” This boy says, “oh, ok Awnie. Maaaaary had a…a….a…oh snap how that song go again?” OMG, y’all coulda knocked me over with a feather. My 3 year-old son and 4 year-old nephew tried to help him out.

I know that nusery rhymes are kinda corny and some have pretty scandalous and objectional origins - but please tell me why a 7 year-old is talking ’bout blowing up somebody’s spot b/c he’s “not cho man?”

  1. we had this problem with the grandkids back when they were still living with their mom. they’d come to our house and say and sing things that would curl the hair on your head. people do not realize that kids pick up on EVERYTHING. and that they repeat it too.

thanks for visiting my blog, btw!

  2. I have the same problem with my nephew. The only problem is my nephew is 15 now and stands about 6′4 so the fact that he can’t remember the Algebra that he learned today in class but he can remember everything 50 Cent and Young Jeezy have ever said in their life is sad! I feel your pain!

No BET, MTV for them at all…and as a result…one twin’s favorite song is “Golden” and the other’s is “Birthday” by R.Kelly…They dont even know who 50 Cent is..U have to monitor your children!
