They Say It’s My Birthday
Yes it is….February 9th (although the post date says the 10th, it’s actually 11pm on the 9th). I am now 34 years-old. Of course I don’t “feel” 34…whatever that means. But I guess that sentiment goes with the territory of growing old older. This is not the purpose of my post.
I don’t celebrate birthdays anymore since becoming muslim several years ago. When I first became muslim, I told my family and friends but of course I still received calls and cards….lots of them that 1st year after becoming muslim. I would always say “thank you, but I don’t celebrate birthdays so don’t go to any trouble”. Of course I was still grateful and happy to be thought of.
This is the 6th birthday I’ve seen since becoming muslim. Every year it was the same thing. Family and friends calling, emailing, sending cards. Me, always politely reminding them that I didn’t celebrate birthdays. Over the years the calls have become less frequent and cards are few and far between. That just shows that most of my family and friends respect my beliefs.
Funny thing is, today NO ONE called, NO ONE sent a card, NO ONE emailed. That’s fine but my first thought was dang….I don’t celebrate birthdays…not you guys!!!!!:)
I guess I kinda miss the sentiment and hearing from my family/loved ones. Tomorrow I’ll probably talk to some of them and my birthday will be acknowledged but without any pomp and circumstance. That’s really ok. I guess I never realized how much the acknowledgement means to me. Of course yesterday an Aunt wished me a happy day…but you know…
Oh, I am not fishing for a happy bday or happy belated bday, this just was on my mind.

I guess, it could be their way of wishing you a happy birthday, by respecting your beliefs….I would feel the same way….I do hope you had a wonderful day

Safa,
Respectfully I say…BOY AM I GLAD YOU WERE BORN!
Additionally…I CAN’T TELL YOU HOW HAPPY I AM THAT YOU HAVE LIVED LONG ENOUGH FOR ME TO FIND OUT ABOUT IT!
Finally…THE FACT THAT YOU ARE STILL HERE AMONG THE LIVING AND MOST LIKELY WILL BE STILL NEXT YEAR THIS TIME, MAKES MY DAY!
THANK YOU FOR ALL THAT YOU HAVE ENABLED ME TO CELEBRATE!
