Got Books?

I just found out that it is Banned Books Week (thanks Ry’s mommy:). When I reviewed the list of books that had been banned, I was kind of suprised to see so many of ones I had read. Books that I think of as standard “must read” books. How many of these books have you read? Literacy and freedom…way cool!

Plate takers

get on my nerves. You know the type - accepts every invitation where food is involved and proceeds to take like 5 plates home. Don’t get me wrong, I love feeding people - more potential blessings. However, this individual begins making heaping extra plates before every other guest has eaten. There have been times when a certain dish ran out and people are short but this person is sitting with a plateful of just meatballs to take home! I mean dag, just because I invite you, doesn’t mean you can get all triflin’ and hoard food to feed your family dinner back at your crib!

NOT a beauty shop experience

I normally have two girlfriends come to my house to do my hair. They are licensed beauticians and really set up my kitchen (literally my kitchen, not my hair:-) like a salon with all of their equipment. I can’t really go to commercial shops b/c of my religion and the chance that men may roll up in there and see me without my hijab. Anyway, this weekend both girls were unavailable so I asked my sister to come over and give me a touch-up, etc. She’s not a professional but does hair (like many sistas can).

You know what they say about doing business with family? First, she didn’t want to base my scalp. She said my hair was too long and thick…and then says she normally doesn’t base hers. Whatever! So she huffed and puffed but did it. Then she did a piss-poor job of washing my hair. Now this is the best part of the experience! Can you believe that I wound up washing, conditioning, and rinsing my hair? Then, I had to blow dry it and style it! Keep in mind I have a newborn. She spent this time on my phone! When she (read I) was done, I handed her $20, mainly b/c I knew she probably needed gas money. She looked at me like I was crazy! So, I just told her that the $20 also included a $10 tip:) Negress puhleeeeze!

Where has the time gone?

My baby started pre-k yesterday. He looked like such a big boy in his little uniform. Today we got his bookbag and I told him he could choose. I knew he would probably pick a Super.man design…boy did he ever! That bag he almost as big as he is! My husband was about to make him put it back but he was too late! The boy had already put it on and was pretty much glued to the thing.

Yesterday as we dropped him off, I lingered outside of the classroom thinking I was gonna cry…I just got a little misty. My husband tries to act all in control but I caught him a few times smiling to himself and I knew he was thinking about our son.

I am crazy. Our kitchen looks like Cost.cos! I knew we would need to pack our son’s lunch but I think I went waaaay overboard. I have fruit cups, juices, waffles, cereal packs, string cheese, cheese crackers, etc..so much more. It will take my 4 year-old the whole school year to finish all of this stuff. I guess I just got excited!
