Summer Vacation Blues…
We are approaching that time of year when I wish I still lived in my hometown of New York City so I could be close to my family. My son is finishing up kindergarten and the hunt for summer camps/activities has begun. There are MANY camps and programs available but they are sooooo expensive! Right now I think we are going to piece-meal his summer camps among various programs. One week will be our family vacation, 2 weeks a nature camp and several weeks a tae kwon do camp. The school system has a summer program and we are currently #68 on that waiting list. UUUGGHHHH. Aside from the high cost of the camp itself, we have to pay someone who will take and pick him up from those programs that start late and end early . There is a summer religious camp that he did last summer but we are trying to mix it up a bit.
I remember when I was a kid, my parents would send me down south to Georgia for the whole summer with family. Times are so diiferent now. I don’t feel comfortable sending my son that far away without us…especially since I can’t be 100% sure my family would adhere to some of the rules we live by. My son is funny acting he probably wouldn’t even want to go anywhere but up under me all day anyway.
If you have children, what will they be doing this summer?

Salaam Alaikum Sis! Good to see you back online…
I feel your pain! Summer camp is soooooooooo expensive!!! It is almost more cost effective to take an unpaid leave of absence from work during the summer to stay home and care for the kids! Mind you, my husband and I are sending 5 children to camp. We found an Islamic camp kind of in our area… insha Allah that will work out.

I went to camp, too! All different sorts. I’d spend time at my grandparents’ house, as well. Loved it. Things have gotten so expensive and it’s tough when there’s a fear that people won’t respect your guidelines enough to send him to stay with fam for awhile. I don’t envy your situation, sis, not at all. #68 on the waiting list? How about the programs at the Y? Are those super ’spensive, too?
